Are you a waiter? Time to quit

Can you imagine walking into a restaurant, the waiter stands there looking at you and not doing or saying anything? How about this you walked into a fancy restaurant, a nicely dressed well-mannered waiter approaches you, and after taking your order for drinks and food, she stands there waiting. She doesn’t move but stands right at your table armed with the order you have just placed. Most people will find that behavior to be weird. Strangely, this is what most people do. They have dreams. Some even set down their goals and craft some plan of actions necessary to reach the goals. Like the weird waiter they stand there armed with a dream, goals to fulfill the dream, and plan of actions to accomplish the goals yet they do nothing. If this describes you, it is time to quit from yourself employed waiter’s job.

If you have wondered how some people can accomplish so much, it is because they are not waiters. They are doers. Before I quit my waiters’ job, I use to wonder too. It has been at the heart of my quest for knowledge. How did someone like John Maxwell write thirty books and counting? How did Brian Tracy write eighty books and counting? The thing is this, the human mind is complicated. We dream big and we sabotage our dreams. We wish and plan elaborately but we stand still and wait for the right time. One year, two years and the right time is yet to come, then we get frustrated. We blame everybody but ourselves. If you are in this club of waiters, the problem is not the right time holding you. Sorry to say this, you are the culprit. I know this because I have been there.

Take a step. Everything that has been accomplished in life started with a thought followed by an action. Let’s say you are going on a journey in a private jet, you will have to walk out of your doors step by step until you get to your private jet that is assuming you have access to one that can park in your garage. If not, you have to walk to your car and be driven to the airport. You get the idea right? It does not get any simpler than that does it? Take a step.

Mark Twain puts it this way, “To get ahead, get started.”

I have found that the battlefield is in the mind. If you have taken the time to learn how to set goals, then the glass is half-full. You will be surprised that most people don’t believe in setting goals. The reasons range from ignorance, laziness, fear, and God knows what else. So if you already know that goal setting is a big step towards success, it means that you have found your way to a different class of people. Kudos! Now what? Knowledge is power only if you know how to use it and do. Take another step.

Adopt the glass-half-full approach in everything because it is a morale buster. If your goal setting followed the SMART [specific, measurable, attainable, realist, time bound] rule and you have designed a plan of actions, all you need to do is simply follow your plan one step at a time.

Let go of over-thinking. If you are fond of over-think things, you have to let go of that because it only leads to paralysis. What gets paralyzed is your success. It’s like starting a new job. The first day of work could be very nerve-racking but you managed to find the nerves to step out and go to work. Everything and everyone was new and strange to you. By the end of the day, the environment wasn’t as scary as it was before you started. Before you know it, the first month has come and gone, then, the second and third months. You no longer feel the tension of being a newcomer. Going to work in that office becomes second nature to you. So it is with your desire to make life-changing efforts. Once you have set your goals and plans, start. With time, you will be on autopilot.

One of the things that can keep you from taking action is fear. It could be a fear of failure or fear of what people might say. The mind is a wonderful thing. From it have come several powerful creations, innovations, and inventions yet also has come all the terrible and horrific things that people have done. The fear that you are feeling is coming from you. Your mind can provide you with a million and one reasons why it is not yet time for you to do the needful. But this can only be effective if you let it. Take one step at a time. Even if you don’t feel like you know all you need to know to start, it is not a deal-breaker. Go ahead, start with what you are sure you know. You can get better as you go along. “You don’t have to be great to start but you have to start to be great.” Zig Ziglar. As babies, if we waited to be great walkers before we gave it a try, we will all be crawling forever.

Keep the company of motivated people. Success is a journey, not a particular spot or destination where you get to and park your vehicle. Change is a continuous process. Make the necessary adjustments and keep moving. You should not expect people who do not know where you are going to join you. Similarly, you should not expect someone who is not prepared to go on that journey to follow you even if they know where you are going. A lot of people believe that success is a destination and such people often look for short cuts. You know better now. Look for people who are motivated along your line of motivation and keep their company. Such people are everywhere. The internet has several them. Look around your locality, you may find some. They will help keep you moving. If you are on my blog, you are in good company.
